Dean’s grey(ish) suit in “8x10 Torn and Frayed” appreciation post
I find it interesting how differently Dean dresses in season eight compared to season one.
The first couple of season had Dean and Sam wearing stiff black suits with classic lines. Nothing out the ordinary - just two “Feds” in black. And the further we get from season one, the more creative Dean gets with his dress-up clothes . Instead of plain black suits, we see Dean in charcoal gray suits, navy blue suits, plaid suits; v-neck sweater vests and and brightly colored ties.
I get the sense that if he’d lived a normal life, Dean might’ve put a lot of effort and creativity into what he wore. We see Dean in “It’s a Terrible Life” with a distinctly metosexual look, with “power clashing” striped ties and pinstripe jackets, suspenders and brightly colored shirts.
Dean enjoys dressing up - we see his enthusiasm for cowboy costumes and 40’s style in “Frontierland” and “Time After Time.” And from the promotional pictures of “LARP and the Real Girl,” Dean won’t say no to the Robin of Sherwood look.
You can see it especially in season seven and eight just how comfortable Dean looks in his Fed ensembles. He and Sam looked so stiff and uncomfortable in their get-ups in the early seasons, but now Dean wears the monkey suits with confidence and power. He looks relaxed in the suits. Is it because he likes the playing the part, pretending to live the life of someone else?
I like to think he’s simply grown out of the bad-boy rebel look. He’s been dressing like John, imitating John even down to the kinds of clothes John wore: classic black suits when necessary, army boots and leather jackets and denim everywhere else. But Dean’s put aside John’s leather jacket. He’s slowly but surely breaking past the excessive machismo look he’s gone for all his life. And though we still see him in the flannel-and-denim ensemble these days, I actually see more of Dean’s personality shining through when we see him in suits.
What would John have thought of the gorgeous suit Dean’s wearing in this gifset? What would he have said about this suit?
This suit isn’t anything John would have worn. It’s all Dean. And it’s wonderful.
Yeeeesssss, give me all the Dean dress up meta.
God though, how does he keep his stuff from wrinkling when he’s in a car. he must have some mad iron skills, and I’m so jealous. SHOW ME HOW TO IRON, DEAN.
Dean has big boy clothes now and I love them.
Maybe Cas mojo’ed them to be supremely wrinkle free.
He still bought an extremely fashionable leather jacket that was shredded in Purgatory. He wears more fitting clothes, his jeans are tighter, and he likes purple/grey, blue and green/back combinations.
